According to National Bow Tie Day's website “One of the most symbolic expressions of dressing well and doing well is the bow tie. Bow ties have a long history of prominence in the menswear world, dating as far back as the 17^th century.”

One of our favorite exotic wood species is Zebrawood. It’s easily recognized for it’s light brown/cream color with dark blackish brown streaks vaguely resembling a zebra’s stripes. These stripes can be either chaotic and wavy, or somewhat uniform in appearance. Even though it’s strong and has a fairly high density, the bold appearance is it’s most stunning point of interest. Bocote, another exotic species we offer, has a yellowish brown body with dramatic dark brown to almost black stripes. This natural grain patterning is quite striking, and it’s not uncommon to see “eyes” (similar to knots) and other figurings in it. Finished off with a naturally oily/waxy feel and great luster, it’s no wonder this wood type is on our list of crowd favorites. ("Frank" pictured above--find it here)

Black Ebony, a dense black hardwood, is actually dense enough to sink in water. It’s finely textured and has a very smooth finish, making it one of the more valuable and expensive types of wood in the world. Typically, Black Ebony does not grow in thick stands or under closed cover but prefers a more solitary existence, often taking hold in rocky and infertile soils where other plants can’t survive. During its early years it develops an extensive system of roots to sustain its life during the long months of the African dry season. Its growth is incremental and take decades to grow even 10 feet and mature into it’s coveted pure black color. ("Russell" pictured above--find it here)

Rosewood, on the other hand, has a beautifully rich dark reddish brown color. It’s high quality feel and appearance is a great choice for wood-workers and the guy who seems to have everything. ("Arthur" pictured above--find it here)

One of our most unique wood types, Purple Heart, is native to tropical regions of Central and South America. With more exposure, it’s freshly cut, dull grayish/purplish color becomes a deeper eggplant purple. (Do note, however, when exposed to large amounts of UV light, the color may shift to a dark brown with purple hues.) It’s strength is great for both form and function, and with a splash of color, it’s no wonder it’s labeled one of our most unique bow tie styles. ("Victor" pictured above--find it here)

Our most common wood type we use for a handful of design styles, is Walnut. The wide range of wood grains can make for a very unique bow tie with a very convenient price tag. Known for it’s strength and durability, it’s sure to age well for generations to come. ("Winston" bow tie pictured above--find it here)

Another frequent wood type we use is a hardwood called White Oak. This very durable species has a trademark wood grain pattern with small rays on the slightly yellow-tinted base. It’s known for it’s density, strength, resiliency and relatively low chance of splintering if broken by impact. ("Earl" bow tie pictured above--find it here)

Wenge, a very dark colored wood, is a popular choice for being who like the Ebony look, but don’t want to pay the higher price for the real thing. It’s distinct striations give it both a brown and black appearance. ("Carl" bow tie pictured above--find it here)

The interlocked grain of the Sapele wood, often times appears wavy and has a fine uniform texture. With a reddish brown color and noticeable luster, it’s natural characteristics make for a consistently perfect engraving every time. ("Sapele Skyline" pictured above--find it here)

Padauk has a bright orange-red color with typically straight wood grain. Also a good candidate for engravings, this wood type is a perfect choice for the guy who isn’t afraid to wear a natural conversation starter wherever they go. ("Harold" bow tie pictured above--find it here)

Maple, on the other hand, is a creamy white hardwood. Known for it’s affordability and durability, it’s a great choice for a consistently clean look. It can take a rough beating and look great for years. One of the best options for engravings, it makes a great Skyline or Custom-etched bow tie. ("Emery" bow tie pictured above--find it here)

Peruvian Walnut’s deep chocolate brown color and soft texture are what sets it apart from all the rest. It’s straight and subtle grain is enhanced by the natural luster this wood type is known for. ("Cleveland" bow tie pictured above--find it here)

Canary, a clear Two Guys favorite, has a striking golden color within it's variations of wood grain. Some pieces can be almost rainbow colored—with dark red streaks, along with the natural orange, yellow, and brown hues. To honor the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed their lives for our country, we wanted to stay patriotic within our color scheme of red, white, and blue. Our Harold wooden bow tie, crafted from red hued Padauk wood, is a perfect statement piece to pair with a light blue shirt. The zig-zag pattern etched on the front of the tie is able to be the main focal point when paired with a solid button-up short sleeved shirt. Pair this striking combo with a pair of neutral shorts, in this case we chose a medium gray, and beige shoes. Add in your favorite pair of sunglasses or watch and you have a fresh, summer ensemble. The other bow tie we are featuring this week is our painted wooden bow tie, Calvin. This handcrafted wooden men's accessory is made from Shedua wood, which is then painted with a red striped pattern on the front. The charcoal gray center fabric balances out the bright painted design. This allows the bow tie to be a great conversational piece without being too loud or overwhelming. Once again, we chose to pair this red-pattered tie with a textured, light blue button-up shirt and neutral bottoms. In this ensemble, we decided this pair of khaki pants complimented the revealed wood grain in the bow tie and a brown belt and pair of sunglasses drew the whole outfit together. The Walnut and Padauk woods are paired with a neutral gray centerpiece, while the Maple and Sapele wood types feature an eye-catching blue fabric. Once your skyline bow tie is ordered, our maker's process takes about 2-3 days as each skyline is handcrafted to order. As soon as the wood piece is hand selected, laser etched, and the fabric and strap are carefully secured, you receive an email notifying you that your USA made wooden bow tie is on it's way to your front door!
